Kali Audio has unveiled the Project Highland Park HP-1 over-ear headphones for studio monitoring and casual use. Kali Audio has been making studio monitors since its founding in 2018, such as these sold on Amazon, and the HP-1 is the California-based manufacturer's first foray into the headphone market.
The Highland Park uses 40 mm drivers with a frequency range of 18 Hz to 22 kHz. Background noise is reduced by its active noise cancellation. A microphone is built-in for phone calls.
The headphones use a digital signal processor (DSP) chip to alter the sound reproduction, with an added lag of 17 msec. Three audio presets are available with a press of a button - Bass Heavy, Consumer, and Studio. Studio mode adjusts the sound so that it is reproduced as faithfully and neutral as possible, according to the company. The other two modes tune the sound to sound more like consumer headphones, emphasizing bass and other characteristics that can make music sound more fun or exciting.
The headphones connect to audio sources using a wired 3.5 mm cable or a wireless Bluetooth connection, which supports the SBC and AAC BT audio codecs. A USB-C port is used to charge the lithium battery, which has up to a 40-hour runtime, according to Kali. The HP-1 measures approximately 7.75 inches tall (19.7 cm) and weighs 0.4 lbs. (181 g).
The Project Highland Park HP-1 over-ear headphones have a MSRP of $199 and are available from Kali's authorized dealers. Readers looking for alternatives might consider this well-rated pair on Amazon.
